This Thursday will mark the anniversary of the tragic death of Corporal Nathan Cirillo. And with the anniversary quickly approaching, Ancaster is officially opening a leash-free dog park in the Hamilton-based soldier’s honour. It is a fitting tribute for a fallen soldier.

Last October, Corporal Nathan Cirillo was shot while standing guard on Parliament Hill. After his death a photo of his dogs waiting for Nathan to come home pulled on heartstrings across the country. And now, the City of Hamilton has officially opened a leash-free dog park in his honour. It was a unanimous decision from city council

“And the reason we got that is because people from Hamilton were insisting that we somehow recognize Nathan and what better way than to recognize him where he regularly came.” said Hamilton city councillor Llyod Ferguson.

His whole family attended with a giant crowd of support. They didn’t want to speak on-camera, but did release a statement. “Their love of Nathan was constant and unconditional. They were his instant exercise partner, and were deliriously happy when they were with Nathan.”

A plaque has been unveiled in his honour and will stay to forever remember Corporal Nathan Cirillo.
