In Hamilton, a colourful and touching memorial remains outside the John W. Foote VC Armoury on James Street for Corporal Cirillo.

The funeral service for Cirillo took place Tuesday in the city’s downtown. But the tributes to Cirillo are ongoing. Hamilton City Councillor Lloyd Ferguson wants to re-name a dog park after him.

The area is next the the Silver City movie theatre in Ancaster and is currently known as “Cinema Park”. Ferguson says it’s a great way to honour the soldier, who used to visit the park with his dogs: “It’s a way of paying tribute, to honour Nathan. It’s a great way to honour someone who died for his country. As a dog lover myself, I think it is a fantastic idea.”

Ferguson says he plans to bring up the name change at the first city council meeting — and adds he expects to see unanimous support.
