Dofasco shutting down coke plant

Arcelormittal Dofasco is shutting down its 62-year-old “number one” coke plant as of march 2015.
The company made the announcement to employees Thursday,saying it will continue to maintain the coke plant at a cost of about 10-million dollars a year until it’s phased out. They also said that it will be working to move permanent employees into other positions.
The steel maker faces 13 charges from the Ministry of the Environment for exceeding standards for visible emissions between April and August of last year. The emissions came from the company’s coke ovens and monitors and cameras were installed in the stacks.
The Hamilton company says it’ll continue to operate its number two and three coke making facilities and will now be responsible for managing an facility in Pennsylvania.
