The federal government wants more time to respond to the Supreme Court of Canada ruling on doctor-assisted death, saying only in Quebec is a comprehensive scheme in place.

Last winter the Supreme Court ruled a federal criminal ban on assisted suicide was unconstitutional and gave Ottawa a year to rewrite it. The ruling takes effect February 6th.

Ontario Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur says she hopes the court grants an extension. But she says if it doesn’t happen, Ontario could introduce its own legislation.

Ontario supports the federal bid for more time because it’s also drafting new medical guidelines.
