DNA match leads to arrest in 2015 Hamilton sex assault case

Hamilton police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault that took place in 2015 when he was a minor.
In the early hours of August 14, 2015, a female was walking alone near Quigley Road and Veevers Drive when the suspect pulled her into a wooded area and assaulted her.
She managed to escape by kicking the man in the face with her boot. Investigators collected DNA evidence from the boot, but no match was found at the time.
In December 2021, a DNA match was identified leading to further investigation and the suspect in the assault was eventually arrested on March 4 of this year.
The police did not say what specifically unfolded that led to the arrest or why a gap of a few years between the DNA match and the arrest took place.
Police say the suspect has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
The suspect’s identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, as he was a youth at the time of the offence.
