Disney on Ice is an event guaranteed to make you smile. And Friday they played host to Hamilton’s Special Olympics skaters. The March break holiday heroes party gave skaters the chance to learn new moves — socialiaze — and meet some popular Disney characters.

A member of Hamilton’s Special Olympics skating program shows everyone watching what he can do. The skaters range in age from 6 to 30-years of age and are learning choreography directly from the Disney on Ice – Princess & Heroes cast.

“It was excellent to be with my brother here and having the experience of meeting all these Disney characters.”

“They’re just very amazing — they blew me away.”

The skaters from Hamilton’s Special Olympics skating program were recognized by the Disney on Ice cast as their heroes. But medals weren’t the only things that they went home with them on this day.

“Challenges are always good for your growth. These guys are not different — they need to be doing something different from the usual routine. It is part of their growth it gives them confidence.

The event also gives the athletes an opportunity to connect with others and develop much needed social skills.

“Very important to be socialized with other people in the community so it’s a life long experience.”

“When they can come and skate all together, that’s the most exciting part.”

Towards the end, Micky, Minnie and Goofy made a surprise visit and the group was elated. Each left knowing exactly what they got from today’s experience.

David said: “Just meeting new people — meeting new friends.”

“How to do the bubbles and how to do the starfish dance.”

“It was a lot of fun right Brena? Ya, we had a lot of fun!”

Hamilton’s Special Olympics skating program was started way back in 1997. The athletes all have different challenges. Many of them have competed at a high level or are training for various Special Olympics events.

Disney on Ice – Princesses and Heroes show is on right now at FirstOntario Center. It runs until March 16th.
