Dirty doc Doodnaught denied bail

A Toronto doctor sentenced to ten years in prison for sexually assaulting women while they were under anesthetic has been denied bail for his appeal.

The Crown argued that to release George Doodnaught would shake the public’s confidence in the justice system and this morning, an Ontario appeals court agreed.

Doodnaught was convicted of assaulting 21 women dating back as far as 1992. His trial ended last November and he was sentenced to 10 years just over a week ago. Most assaults involved women in the OR at North York General Hospital.

The victims range in age from the early 20s to mid-70s. They testified to being kissed and inappropriately touched while semi-conscious.

Doodnaught’s lawyer had argued that their client has community support and would not re-offend.

In his decision Justice Harry LaFlamme said he believed that the grounds for an appeal are weak and unlikely to succeed and therefore to release Doodnaught would not be in the public interest.
