Digging out after the storm

While it’s been more than a day since the snow hit our area, many streets and sidewalks are still not passable and the conditions forced the second day of school cancellations. Some progress has been made throughout the day, plows have been out all day long trying to clear some of the side streets.

While some can dig themselves out, it can also be dangerous according to a Cardiologist at Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Craig Ainsworth says the last 24 hours has been very busy and the Cardiac Care Unit usually sees 2 to 3 major heart attacks per 24 hours, and after the snowfall, they saw about 13 or 14. Dr. Ainsworth says about half of the Cardiac patients were shoveling at the time and they didn’t have any warning signs, but there are some things you can watch out for. Accessive perpetrations, nausea, shortness of breath, chest pain, or even pain going down into the arm are all warning signs of heart attacks.

Monday was supposed to be the first day back to in-person learning for students, but it was a snow day again today for most students in our area. School boards said they closed the schools out of an abundance of caution for the safety of the students and staff.

Schools are getting ready for in-class learning Wednesday, January 19.
