Detention centre in lockdown

The Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre is still in an extended lockdown, because of a labour dispute.

The centre is under a rotating lockdown, where inmates are allowed to access phones and showers before returning to their cells.

The union representing the guards has instructed them to ignore a Ministry of Labour order to return to work.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services says the lockdown was put in place Tuesday to “accommodate a security search” for a missing piece of metal, which could be used as a weapon.
