Deer hunt closes sections of conservation area
Parts of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area will be closed over the next several weeks for deer hunting by local natives.
The Hamilton Conservation Authority says so far people living in the area have been quiet about the hunt compared to last year when some neighbours were outraged that hunting was allowed so close to residences.
The Dundas Valley Conservation Area will be closed to the general public Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays until December 21st in the area bordered by Martin, Paddy Greens, Powerline and Jerseyville. All trails in that area will be closed.
The HCA says they came to an agreement with the Haudenosaunee last week on protocol for hunting on the grounds. The 1701 Treaty of Albany recognizes First Nations’ rights to hunt in that area.
20 or so hunters are expected at any given time on the grounds during the hunting season, taking a maximum of 40 deer.
While there is a residential area nearby, they aren’t allowed to hunt within 150 meters of a house.
