Debug is a Canadian science fiction film written and directed by David Hewlett. The film stars Jeananne Goossen, Adrian Holmes, Adam Butcher, and Jason Momoa as a psychopathic A.I. named Iam. Production on the film took place at Pinewood Studios in Toronto.
Deep space. Six young hackers on a grueling work release program attempt to clear out – debug – the computer systems of a massive derelict freighter. They quickly fall prey to the ship’s vengeful artificial intelligence, a program that would kill to be human. As the fractious team is forced to match wits with this rogue program, they discover that the ship holds a deadly secret, and a fate far worse than death.
Hewlett, who has done a lot of work as an actor in science fiction television series and films, thinks the genre is a great way to tackle real world issues. “Science fiction is such a great opportunity for social commentary, allowing you to deal with subjects in a more fun, over the top way. Sci-fi horror is a sub-genre I loved as a kid. This is a film about not liking humans and preferring computers because to me, the fear of technology is not about technology itself, but about our interaction with technology.”
Debug is rated 14A.
