David Dixon quits

The City of Hamilton is looking for a new head of transit after the sudden resignation of HSR head David Dixon. He announced today he will be leaving the job, and the city for an other opportunity. David Dixon was hired in late 2014, to replace longtime HSR head Don Hull.. Now after less than two years as the director of HSR, Dixon announced his resignation this morning.

And the news of his departure sent ripples through city hall.

Among the projects he lead, Dixon put forward the 10-year transit strategy for the HSR that lead to improvements to mountain bus service. He also played an important role in bringing more city control to DARTS services. But with the fate of the $1 billion LRT project still uncertain. The head of the bus union says Dixon’s frustration towards the lack of movement at council, may have lead to his leave.

But Mayor Eisenberger disagreed, “Any transit operator would love to have a billion dollars to spend on a transit operation in their cities, so that’s an unfathomable thought for me.”

Dixon responded to the speculation, saying his leave isn’t a result of any political debate. He did however say the next head of transit will be left with one question to answer.

“I think the LRT is good. You might ask whether it’s the right time or not.”

Dixon did not reveal any details about the new job offer, but did say he will be moving to another city where rail transit is expanding.
