Dangerous day on the roads

It’s been a dangerous day on the roads for drivers in the Hamilton area, and a busy day for police.

One officer was taken to hospital after his cruiser was hit on the Red Hill, and in another incident, OPP officers were involved in a car chase down the QEW.

This afternoon OPP got word from Hamilton police that a stolen vehicle was making its way toward the QEW.

OPP say they were able to quickly spot the driver and tried to pull him over in the Toronto bound lanes near Burlington Street, but the accused wasn’t stopping so officers had to box the car in.

Once they did, police had a difficult time getting the driver out of the vehicle, and had to break some of the windows to get into the car.

The accused suffered minor injuries related to the force used to break the window. He’ll eventually be taken to the Burlington detachment for further questioning and is expected to eventually be charged.

“Charges are pending on the accused and those charges are going to be numerous. There will be some alcohol related charges charges obviously related to the driving at the time officers saw him and charges related to the stolen vehicle. Those will be instituted by Hamilton police,” says Graham Williamson of the OPP.

In a separate incident, a Hamilton police officer was injured in a crash on the Red Hill Valley Parkway this morning. He was trying to close down the Queenston ramp while responding to another collision when his cruiser was struck.

He suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
