There have been more serious fires in the town of Fort Erie in the past month than they usually see all year.

The latest blaze occurred Sunday night about 9pm in a vacant house on Nigh Road near Cherry Hill Boulevard. When firefighters arrived, the back of the house was fully engulfed in flames. The tenant who used to live there moved out weeks ago. The owners were renovating the house. Damage is pegged at more than 125-thousand dollars. This is the eighth significant fire in Fort Erie in the past six weeks. The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze.

Fort Erie Fire Chief Larry Coplen: “They have been called. Unfortunately, they won’t be coming down. They’ve had 6 large fires overnight, including a fatality so we’re going to be processing the scene with Niagara Regional Police.”

Investigators began their probe into the source of the fire Monday afternoon. They’re asking residents who have information on any of these suspicious fires to give Crime Stoppers or Niagara police a call.
