A multiple-alarm fire in a high-rise building under construction in downtown Hamilton was quickly extinguished Wednesday afternoon.

Crews with the Hamilton Fire Department responded shortly before 4 p.m. for a report of a structure fire on King St. East between Hughson St. South and John St. South.

Assistant Deputy Chief Ryan Coburn says a small fire broke out on the fifth floor of the building.

It was quickly upgraded to a multiple-alarm fire with nearly a dozen units attending the scene.

Coburn says fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze caused by construction materials.

He did not indicate whether anyone was injured.

A cost of damage has not been determined at this time.
