The so-called “creepy clown” sightings have spread across more than 20 U.S. states and parts of Canada leading to arrests, school warnings and police investigations. Over the weekend CHCH news received two emails warning of clown sightings in the east end. While the Hamilton police don’t have any record of these incidents, it has kids scared and parents wondering how to broach the subject. Those who work in the professional clown business say what’s happening is heartbreaking.
Denise Cooperwhite has been performing as Sneezy the clown for 18 years. She got into the clowning business out of a love for children and to simply make people smile. She says dressing up as a creepy clown and trying to scare people is no joking matter.
“Just tell your kids this is just a small group the police are looking after it they are going to make it go away. It’s going to go away and there are some very nice clowns out there that are very good.”
Two women dressed as clowns were arrested in Michigan last week after allegedly chasing and threatening two 14-year-old girls. Sneezy is worried scary clown sightings could be bad for professional clowns everywhere. Schools in Ottawa and the GTA sent warning letters home to parents after police incidents involving teenagers dressed as clowns.
Hamilton police say they are fully aware of the so-called clown sightings but say the topic appears to be mainly associated to social media. Police do say that if anyone feels unsafe police should be called immediately, clown or not.
