Two men convicted of killing a Hamilton man three and a half years ago, were handed their sentences on Friday. But for the family of the victim, Jesse Kovacs, the jail time just does not seem to be enough.
Kovacs’ sister Mary found her brother dead in his Hamilton apartment after George and Matthew Cooke robbed Jesse for prescription drugs and jewelery. They left him face down with his hands tied behind his back. Because Jesse had a number of health issues, he was unable to free himself and died.
The judge sentenced George Cooke of Port Hope to 12 years in prison for manslaughter, but with credit for time served, he will be out in seven. His nephew, Matthew Cooke, was sentenced to 10 years, but will be out in just under five.
29 year old Danielle Delottinville, the former lead singer of a Hamilton punk band, was sentenced to three years for her part in Jesse’s death.
George Cooke has had 38 convictions. He also invaded a home in Trenton 10 years ago. In that robbery, Cooke had a gun and a knife. The judge pointed out that at least in this case, the Cooke’s never used a weapon to kill him.
