A disturbing story that’s sparking outrage beyond the city of St. Catharines. A vet there has been caught on video abusing animals and while the images are graphic, they’re also responsible for a loud call for change, a call that’s made it all the way to Queen’s Park.
Skyway Animal Hospital was closed today but that didn’t stop pet owners from making a visit to the Welland avenue clinic. Many are simply looking for answers after a series of graphic videos captured by former employees show the vet choking and punching animals. Braxis was one of a number of pets seen being hit by Dr. Mahavir Singh Rekhi over the last three years. The video shows the 17-year-old dalmatian being punched in the face after undergoing surgery on his ear in 2013. Just two weeks after his surgery, Braxis’ condition got worse and was put down.
A series of videos recorded and released by former employees of the hospital show dogs being dragged across the floor and slammed on a table. Dr.Rekhi is currently facing a 10 month suspension for his behaviour. The Skyway Animal Hospital was pelted with eggs this morning. The hospital which is owned by Dr.Rehki was closed for the day with no explanation given and calls to hospital were also not returned.
A petition on Change.org is calling for the College of Veterinarians of Ontario to revoke Dr.Rekhi’s licence.
*In our 6 pm newscast we reported that Mahavir Singh Rekhi worked previously at Martindale Animal Clinic we have since learned that was not the case. We apologize for the error
