As the Harper government plans to pass a motion in Parliament tonight to extend its bombing mission on terrorist targets in Iraq and expand the mission into Syria, a group of demonstrators say the action is illegal. Members of the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War held an information picket outside the federal building downtown this afternoon.
The group’s Ken Stone argues the action violates international law. “It doesn’t have the permission of the UN Security Council, so technically it’s illegal. But now what Mr Harper wants to do is he wants to expand the war in Syria and Syria is a sovereign country.”
“To go into Syria without the permission of the Syrian government is a violation of international law. It’s a war crime.”
The coalition agrees with the NDP that the role of the missions should be exclusively humanitarian, not military with a focus to resolve issues politically.
