City website outage was part of ‘precautionary system changes’: Hamilton

The City of Hamilton’s main website outage was the result of some “precautionary system changes” staff are taking in response to the ongoing ransomware attack.

The City of Hamilton’s main web page stopped working Sunday.

Those trying to access the site were met with an error screen.

“I can say the outage was not a new cybersecurity incident,” City spokesperson Lauren Vastano told CHCH News. “It was a precautionary system change made by city staff in response to the ongoing cybersecurity incident.”

The outage marks the latest chapter in an ongoing “cybersecurity incident” that has ensnarled much of the city’s IT infrastructure.

“We recognize this issue, compounded with the current cybersecurity incident, is frustrating,” the city said in an update Sunday morning.

By Monday morning, the website was back up and running.
