The City of Burlington has issued a statement opposing the proposed expansion of the Nelson Quarry being appealed at the Ontario Land Tribunal.
In the statement issued on Thursday, Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward and Ward 3 Councillor and Deputy Mayor for the Environment Rory Nisan said the development has “are too many potentially negative impacts to the area, environment, wildlife, and community.”
According to the statement, Burlington Council has appointed legal counsel to attend the tribunal on the City’s behalf to oppose the proposed application and any other applications made by Nelson Aggregates for that purpose in its appeal to the tribunal.

An application was first submitted by Nelson Aggregates Co. to amend the 2009 Regional Official Plan to expand the site at Mount Nemo in 2020.
The expansion would push the quarry onto lands that currently house the Burlington Springs Golf Club and agricultural and residential developments.
The region of Halton would initially object to the proposal, sparking a back-and-forth between the region and the company that would lead to the application ultimately being referred to the province’s land tribunal.
