Hamilton City Council wants help from other levels of government to pay for a planned statue to honour Lincoln Alexander.

Council has voted to begin the process of commissioning the piece, which could cost up to $300,000.

Many councillors think that’s too high for municipal tax dollars, and want other levels of government to share the cost. They say Alexander made history at all levels of government.

He was Canada’s first black MP and federal cabinet minister, as well as Ontario’s first black lieutenant governor.
