Two suspected armed robbers were stopped in their tracks by residents and employees of a downtown Hamilton condo building.

It happened Monday night at the Chateau Royale on James street south just before 7 pm. Police say two men wore masks and forced their way into one of the condos, one of them appearing to have a handgun. The pair tried to restrain a man inside but he was able to break free and alert others in the building. The two men ran but they were both stopped by people inside and held until police arrived. Jay Perkins was one of those people.

“I just heard there’s a knife, there’s a knife. I came out of the elevator, dropped what I was doing and came around the corner. The concierge had the guy already kind of tied up. He had a knife on him. So I kind of jumped in and helped put him down on the ground. Then I grabbed the knife away from him and put it behind the security desk. Then we basically subdued him until the police came.”

No one involved was seriously hurt. 33-year-old Kevin Franks of Hamilton and 21-year-old Dylan MacDonald of Stoney Creek are both facing multiple charges.
