Chinnery Shooting Inquest

A date has been set for a coroners inquest into the police shooting that killed Andreas Chinnery in Hamilton.
It’s been nearly 5 years since Andreas Chinnery was shot and killed by Hamilton Police and with a coroners inquest looming, his father Robert is searching for answers.
On the night of February 2, 2011, police responded to a noise complaint at Chinnery’s Barton Street East apartment.
Police say he answered the door holding a baseball bat, and began swinging. It’s believed he was in a mental distress. Chinnery was shot seconds later.
The purpose of the inquest is not to assign blame, but answer all questions surrounding Chinnerys death.
After seeing Constable James Forcillo walk out of a Toronto court on Monday, even though he was found guilty of attempted murder in the shooting of 18 year old Sammy Yatim, Robert Chinnery feels the system is stacked against him.
The two week inquest will begin on March 7th, and the 5 member jury can also make recommendations in the hopes of preventing future events like this.
The Hamilton Police now have the mobile crisis response unit designed to help in situations like that of Andreas Chinnery, and they are one of the first police forces to equip all front line officers with tasers as a less lethal option for protection.
Both officers involved in the shooting have been cleared of any wrongdoing by the special investigations unit.
The inquest will take place at the John Sopinka courthouse on March 7th.
