A date has been set for the start of an inquest into the death of a 19 year old man who was shot and killed by a Hamilton police officer five years ago.
The inquest, which starts on March 7th, will examine the events surrounding the death of Andreas Chinnery. Chinnery was shot and killed on February 2nd, 2011, after he defied orders to drop a baseball bat and started swinging at a police officer inside his apartment.
The SIU, which has since cleared the officer involved, says police had gone to the apartment in response to a noise and threatening complaint.
The inquest will be held at John Sopinka Courthouse in Hamilton. It is expected to hear from approximately 20 witnesses and last two weeks. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.
