A coroners inquest into the death of an 18 year old Hamilton man who was fatally shot by police, has been adjourned until next spring.

Andreas Chinnery died in February of 2011 after being shot by police who’d been called to his Barton Street East apartment.

Police say Chinnery confronted them with a bat, and the province’s Special Investigations Unit cleared the officers in the shooting.

Chinnery’s father, Robert, picketed a police station last year, when he found out the officers had been cleared.

Monday’s inquest was postponed in part because “Robert” suffered a medical emergency and has been hospitalized.

The family’s lawyer has also asked for more time to prepare expert witnesses.

The provincial children’s advocate has also applied for standing in the inquest, as Chinnery had extensive involvement with the Catholic Children’s Aid Society and the youth criminal justice system.
