Children’s Aid bill reintroduced

Hamilton Mountain MPP and NDP Children and Youth Services Critic Monique Taylor is reintroducing her private member’s bill Wednesday, which, if passed, would grant the Ontario Ombudsman oversight of Children’s Aid Societies.

This comes in the wake of last week’s news of a now-teenaged girl who was abused for years in the care of her children’s aid guardian. In a statement, Taylor said,

“Many CAS decisions can have a life-or-death impact on society’s most vulnerable youth. families need an independent route they can take if they have a complaint, and the public needs to know that an independent body can investigate when things go wrong.”

Taylor’s original bill passed second reading, but was left in the dust when Dalton McGuinty shut down Queen’s Park last October.
