Update: 43 year old David Harrison of Niagara Falls has been charged with possession of substances which may be used to produce explosives and was held pending a bail hearing. All road closures have now been re-opened.

A section of Niagara Falls remains sealed off for over 12 hours, after police found chemicals inside a motel room. A man has been taken in for questioning after unknown chemicals were found inside the CJS Inn.

“Some of the residents inside the motel and a neighbouring residence were evacuated for their safety.” Sgt.Richard Gadreau, Niagara Regional police.

A heavy police presence remained at the back of the motel on Kitchener Street and Slater Avenue this morning. Investigators narrowed their focus to a room located on the second floor. The explosive disposal unit was called in as well as the OPP who set up a command post near the site. Police were not able to identify the chemicals in the room, nor were they able to say if the chemicals were used to make drugs, but one neighbour says the motel is a hot spot for such activity.

The motel, which is across the Post cereal plant, changed owners only a few months ago. It was once known as the Red Carpet Inn. Neighbours say the man who was taken into custody has been in the neighbourhood before, police however have not released his name.
