Chef is a comedy film from writer/director Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Elf). Favreau stars as Carl Casper, a chef with a flair for exotic foods that has the opportunity to impress a popular food blogger when he comes his restaurant. The owner of the restaurant however wants Carl to stick to the usual menu, which leads to a negative review and public shaming of Carl’s skills. Frustrated, he quits the restaurant and travels to Miami where, with the help of his friend, his ex-wife and their son, he opens a food truck and takes a cross-country trip serving up his take on traditional Cuban fare. The film sports an ensemble cast featuring Sofía Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt, Bobby Cannavale, Dustin Hoffman, and Robert Downey, Jr.

Favreau got his start making independent films like Swingers and Made, but has spent the last 10 years directing big budget blockbusters. With Chef, he returns to the kind of film that launched his career. “I wanted to write a screenplay from scratch, let the characters speak in the voices I gave them, cast the people who I wanted to work with and then see where that led me. I haven’t made a small movie like this in a very long time,” he says. “I thought it would be interesting to bring the skills I’ve developed to this type of project. I wanted to try something on a different scale and face a different set of challenges that would keep me sharp and grounded.”

Chef is rated 14A.
