It’s day 2 of the cheese smuggling trial of Niagara Police officer Scott Heron. Heron is accused of smuggling $300 000 worth of cheese into Canada. Today, the prosecution’s star witness Geoff Purdie was grilled by Heron’s lawyer.
Former Niagara Police officer Geoff Purdie admitted to flashing his police i.d on smuggling runs at the border to try to avoid detection. He spent a year in a U.S. Prison, convicted of conspiracy to smuggle half a million dollars worth of steroids over the border. Purdie got a year because he agreed to testify against his good friend Constable Scott Heron.
Heron’s defence lawyer Mike Delgobbo says Heron only made the phone calls, it was Purdie who actually smuggled the cheese.
Alex Zurby, a phys-ed teacher testified he was selling the cheese to restaurants in Port Dover and Brantford. He was also selling smuggled chicken wings and deep fried pickles. He’d sell a case of cheese for $150 dollars, take $20 dollars off the top and gave the rest to Geoff Purdie and Scott Heron.
