The City of Hamilton’s water division says crews will continue the cleanup at Chedoke Creek on Monday to meet the provincial deadline.

Having completed the preparatory work last week, crews will start working between the bridges at Kay Drage Park and the Desjardins Trail.

The initial phase will involve the removal of debris such as rocks and trees from the water, after which dredging operations will begin.

The targeted dredging is to restore the impacts of the 24 billion-litre raw sewage leak that happened between January 2014 and July 2018.

This $6 million initiative faced delays last summer when members of the Haudenosaunee Development Institute (HDI) interrupted the work site, citing the exercise of their treaty rights.

According to the city’s engineering team, approximately 11,000 cubic meters of sediment are expected to be removed during the cleanup process.

The province extended its deadline, providing city hall with until Oct. 31 to complete the project.
