Now to the latest on the terrifying shooting in Charleston South Carolina that authorities are investigating as a hate crime. The man accused of killing nine people was in court Friday for a bond hearing, where he heard for the first time from families of the victims.
21-year-old Dylann Roof is charged with nine counts of murder and possession of a firearm. This comes as the justice department moves forward with its investigation and possible prosecution for hate crimes.
Two days after he killed 9 people in cold blood, Dylann Roof, faced a judge. The 21-year-old is charged with nine counts of murder and possession of a firearm. The judge set bond at 1 million dollars on the gun charge. Roof appeared via video but showing no emotion.
Some of the families of the victims were at the hearing. Ethel Lance was a custodian at the church for nearly 30 years and her daughter gave an emotional statement. “You hurt me, you hurt a lot of people.. but God forgives you and I forgive you.”
Dylann Roof admits to investigators he did it, wanting to start a race war, when he shot and killed nine people at the Charleston AME Church Wednesday. That’s according to two law enforcement officials.
Community members are now shifting their focus to healing and remembering the victims of this tragedy. A memorial at the Church continues to grow behind crime scene tape while a community prayer vigil is planned for Friday night.
