CFL Expansion draft

A trio of Tiger-Cats were taken in Monday’s Ottawa Redblacks expansion draft. Among them was a man who has played for one team and one team only, the Ticats, during his ten year CFL career; Marwan Hage. And one of the quarterbacks Hage will be snapping the ball to is an old friend, Kevin Glenn.

After ten years in black and gold as a player and community ambassador, Marwan Hage is no longer a Tiger-Cat.

Head Coach and General Manager Kent Austin: “It’s gonna be tough to see him go. He’s been a great player and a good person and I care for him a lot.”

Ultimately, Austin said he had to think of the future, and his decision was based largely on the young, depth of talent on the offensive line.

Austin: “We have Filer, we have Wojt that can snap. There’s plenty of options there.”

Ottawa Redblacks Head Coach Rick Campbell: “I think we’re fortunate to have a group of o-linemen that are very difficult to find. The fact we got that many o-linemen is exciting.”

Hage could be snapping the pigskin to some familiar hands. Kevin Glenn was the final selection in the first round. B.C.’s back-up, Thomas Demarco, was the other pivot picked.
Having spent the last 2 seasons in Calgary with Redblacks Head Coach Rick Campbell made Glenn a logical choice.

Marcel Desjardins is the Redblacks General Manager: “Obviously kevin is familiar with what we’re gonna want to do offensively, and we have a combination of veteran leadership and younger players. All the elements for a strong team, especially at that position.”

Along with Hage, the Redblacks drafted Ticat running back Chevon Walker, and fullback John Selahunt, two players who demonstrated great talent on the field, but who also missed time last season because of injury. Exactly who Austin protected from being drafted remains confidential: “I didn’t sit there and go, I hope they don’t pick this guy, and that guy. We knew we were gonna lose good football players. We’re not the only ones in that boat.”
