Ceremony commemorates anniversary of The Battle of the Atlantic

A ceremony was held Sunday at the H.M.C.S. Star to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the longest battle in World War II.

The Battle of the Atlantic lasted almost six years— spanning from September 1939 to May 1945. The battle claimed the lives of more than 70 thousand allies including 4600 Canadians.

Hamilton played a large role in the Second World War with nearly 7500 sailors —about 7 per cent of the entire Navy by the end of the war— having been recruited from the city.
