Queen Elizabeth II made her final journey home today. Her coffin was driven through the streets of London to Buckingham Palace with tens of thousands of people lining up to watch and cheer as the city prepares for her funeral

People lined the streets of London despite the September rain to see the queen’s coffin go by, throwing flowers, applauding, and singing God Save the Queen.

Earlier, the queen’s daughter, Princess Ann accompanied the coffin on one of the last legs of the journey, as a Royal Air Force Transport carried the coffin home from Scotland, where more than 30,000 people filed through Edinburgh’s St. Giles Cathedral to pay their respects.

King Charles was in Northern Ireland to continue his duties, with a church service in Belfast, and a meeting with Northern Ireland’s leaders where he promised to continue his mother’s efforts to maintain peace in the British province.

The queen’s coffin will remain in Buckingham Palace for the night.

Tomorrow a horse-drawn carriage will carry the coffin with the king and royal family walking behind through London to the houses of parliament where the public will be able to view the coffin, leading up to the funeral on Friday.
