Mark Carney expected to call federal election on Sunday

Media sources are reporting that Prime Minister Mark Carney will ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election this Sunday.

Voting is expected to take place on April 28 or May 5, but has not yet been confirmed.

Liberal Party sources have previously said Carney planned to call an election shortly after winning the Liberal leadership race to replace Justin Trudeau on March 9.

Although the next election was not scheduled until October, sources say Carney is hoping a snap election will ensure a strong mandate in the face of the escalating trade war between the U.S. and Canada.

This is a developing story. More to come.
