Captive is a thriller directed by Jerry Jameson. The story is based on the memoir An Unlikely Angel by Ashley Smith, which focuses on the escape of Brian Nichols from a courthouse in Atlanta. The film stars David Oyelowo, Kate Mara, Michael K. Williams, Leonor Varela, Jessica Oyelowo, and Mimi Rogers.

CAPTIVE, based on a miraculous true story that drew the attention of the entire nation, is a thrilling drama about the spiritual collision of two broken lives. When Brian Nichols – on the run as the subject of a city wide manhunt and desperate to make contact with his newborn son – takes recovering meth addict Ashley Smith hostage in her own apartment, she turns for guidance to Rick Warren’s best-selling inspirational book, The Purpose Driven Life. While reading aloud, Ashley and her would-be killer each face crossroads where despair and death intersect hope.

Oyelowo revealed in an interview with The Dove Foundation that he was really inspired by the story of Brian Nichols and Ashley Smith. “The fact that you have a murderer and a meth addict in an apartment together for seven hours that resulted in a positive outcome is an amazing story. Ashley faced the ultimate choice and as a result of that encounter, never touched meth again, brought her life back, embraced her salvation and recognized the fact that God was in her life giving her a second chance. I find the story so powerful.”
