A lot of Canadians own property in Florida and have been waiting to see how their homes down south held up during the hurricane. That includes one St. Catharines family who are travelling to their vacation home on Monday. For other travellers who want to cancel their plans to travel to Florida are being told to check with their airlines for their cancellation policy during the hurricane.

Paul Lalama and his family are flying to Florida next week. With warnings of 11 foot waves and extreme winds he wasn’t sure there was going to be a condo to stay in. As the area prepared for the possibility of a devastating strike by hurricane Matthew, schools closed, airports closed, evacuations began and residents prepared for the possibility of a historic catastrophe. Luckily south Florida didn’t get hit as badly as expected.

For those Canadians travelling to any of the locations affected by the hurricane they are being urged to check with their airlines to see what kind of hurricane policy is in place.

“They are allowed to make changes without any additional fees or they can keep the value of the ticket that they have already purchased as a credit for future travel up to one year.” Diane Beltrano, tripcentral.ca.

Most airlines and travel companies will have their cancellation policies in place right through until Monday. Tripcentral says they have been flooded with calls from Canadians cancelling trip to Florida, especially Disney World which closed yesterday because of the hurricane. Travel agents say for those who are still deciding whether to fly south or not check with your travel provider first to see what options you have.
