Canadian skier dies from injuries
Canadian skier Nik Zoricic, 29, has died from injuries sustained after a crash during a race in Switzerland.
The Toronto native crashed into the safety nets of the course during a World Cup skicross race Saturday and was airlifted to hospital. He died as a result of “severe neurotrauma,” according to the International Ski Federation.
The crash happened just before the finish, and television pictures show Zoricic lose his skis and poles after crashing into the netting.
Zoricic was treated on course before being taken to a hospital by helicopter.
He was a member of the Craigleith Ski Club near Collingwood, and competed on the World Cup circuit for more than three years, placing eighth at the World Championships last year at Deer Valley, Utah.
Organizers have abandoned Saturday’s World Cup event.
