Canadian Red Cross helping Nepal quake victims

Canadian aid workers are among those helping the survivors of the Nepal earthquake. CHCH News spoke with France Hurtubise of the Red Cross by phone, who told us what Canadians are doing to help the survivors.

“We started treating patients at the field hospital, we had quite a lot of patients. We will be adding a surgical unit. We have a medical clinic with an ambulance.”

“We visit villages far away from the hospital to make sure there are not any people stranded or people who cannot move. If we find any of those people we bring them to the Red Cross hospital.”

Hurtubise says a monsoon is also approaching Nepal and poses a major threat because many people are currently without housing.

The death toll is more than 7500 with another 14,000 injured. It’s estimated that at least two million people will need tents, water, food and medicine over the next three months.

So far the Canadian Red Cross has raised $11 million; to help, you can call 1-800-418-1111, or donate online.
