Canadian passports compromised by Russian spy ring

Newly-released federal memos warn the illegal use of Canadian passports by Russian spies poses a threat to the travel document’s integrity.


The Foreign Affairs documents say Canada deplores the exploitation of its passports by Russian agents, who used them to build a spy ring in the United States.

However, the Embassy of Russian Federation in Canada says Canadian officials did not raise the matter with them.

Foreign Affairs officials will only say that communication with other countries is confidential.

Last year, 11 people were indicted on charges of spying for Russia in the U.S. Four of those indicted claimed to be Canadian.
