The Canadian Motor Speedway project in Fort Erie has been given the “green flag” to move forward. The province has told the speedway this week that it could proceed with a two lane interchange at the QEW but it’s been nearly nine years since the speedway was announced and there’s still no oval track or grandstand in sight.

The vision for the Canadian Motor Speedway near bowen road and the QEW in Fort Erie features a racing oval designed by Nascar’s Jeff Gordon, and a grandstand seating up to 65 thousand fans. One of the big issues for the province was how to move that many people to and from the highway.

“The MTO seemed to believe we needed a four lane interchange and CMS was going to be on the hook for the cost of that at $38 million” said Erik Thomas from the Canadian Motor Speedway.

But the province has told CMS it can move forward with a two lane roadway as long as it can control the traffic. CMS says in the spring it can start grading the property and relocating Miller’s Creek. “I believe it’s going to happen, it’s just a lot of red tape.”

It’s been nearly nine years since the 400 million dollar speedway project was announced.

Completion is scheduled for late 2017.
