Canada’s tariff standoff with U.S. over

Canada’s standoff with the United States over steel and aluminum tariffs is over.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement during an unscheduled stop at Stelco in Hamilton Friday afternoon.

The Prime Minister met with steel workers in their lunchroom to deliver the news. Stelco CEO Alan Kestenbaum lavished praise on the federal government for its work on the trade agreement. In fact he says Stelco had the highest profit margin and performed better on the stock market than any other north american steel company in the past year. When the tariffs were imposed Stelco focused 85 per cent of its sales in Canada and made profit without laying off workers. Hamilton mayor Fred Eisenberger was recovering from some morning eye surgery when he found out the Prime Minister was coming with news. The Prime Minister said Canada did not have to make any concessions the tariffs were hurting businesses on both sides of the border.
