Canada Post and Hamilton continue legal battle

Canada Post and the city of Hamilton were back in court Wednesday over the placement of community mailboxes.
The legal battle focuses on who has final say when it comes to where these community mailboxes can go.
A local bylaw requires Canada Post to get a $200 permit per site to install the super boxes
The judge noted that Canada Post has said “repeatedly” they’re willing to consult with the city on the location of the mailboxes.
But the city’s lawyer admitted it hasn’t reviewed the hundreds of locations submitted by Canada Post and doesn’t know whether they meet the standards laid out in the bylaw.
Canada Post is in the process of installing the super mailboxes as part of it’s plan to stop home mail delivery
The judge questioned whether city council just didn’t like the idea of cancelling door-to-door delivery.
Their lawyer denied it saying the city simply wants to regulate where the boxes can go to make sure they don’t conflict with existing infrastructure and are placed in safe locations.
The case will be back in court next Thursday and the judge has said it will be at least two weeks after that before he makes a decision
