Canada ends mission in Afghanistan

After more than a decade — and 158 lives lost, Canada’s military formally ended their mission in Afghanistan. Canadian troops lowered the maple leaf flag at the NATO headquarters in Kabul on Wednesday. Canadian and international dignitaries were at the heavily guarded ceremony. The last 100 Canadian soldiers will stay behind to train Afghan national security forces — which will be completed over the next few days.

On such a significant day we thought it would be interesting to get a soldier’s perspective on the mission. We’ve turned to Warrant Officer Steven Gardiner a few times to talk about the war in the past ten years. He did two tours in Afghanistan — and we’re pleased to have him live in studio.
