Two people were killed in a car crash on the QEW last night. This has led to further calls to make our road safer.
One Hamilton councillor says enough is enough and the carnage has to stop.
Police have not released the names of the man and woman killed in last night’s wreckage. The crash happened just a few hundred metres away from the Red Hill Valley Parkway, a highway all too familiar with fatal collisions.
Nine people were involved in the fatal collision on the Niagara-bound lanes of the QEW. Five vehicles, two injuries and two deaths.
Traffic was at a stand still during rush hour as police closed all lanes.
OPP believe the crash happened during a slow down in traffic causing a chain reaction, including one between a transport truck and a minivan.
The driver and passenger of the Toyota Sienna were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to hospital with injuries, but police say the have since been released.
This latest tragedy is just another example of how deadly our highways are. Road safety has been a hot button issue of late at Hamilton’s City Hall and one councillor is calling for major changes to one of the cities most dangerous expressways.
Hamilton councillor Sam Merulla wants to install photo radar to improve safety on the Red Hill and the Lincoln Alexander Parkway.
“It’s a speedway and people are not getting the message that it is 90 km an hour people are 130 km treating it like one of the 400 series highways.”
Since opening seven years ago, the Red Hill has seen over 450 crashes and five fatalities.
Merulla plans to introduce a motion for cameras, instead of an increased police presence.
He believes photo radar would alter driver behaviour and hopefully reduce the number of crashes.
“The bottom line is this, photo radar can be up 24/7 and not impact tax payers.”
