A judge has ordered the suspect in Calgary’s worst mass murder to undergo a 30 day assessment to determine whether he is mentally fit to stand trial.

Matthew De Grood is charged with five counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of five people at a house party a week ago.

De Grood, the son of a Calgary police officer, appeared in court via closed circuit television.

His court appearance comes as the victims are laid to rest. Three funerals were held yesterday, another will be held today and the fifth is scheduled for tomorrow.

De Grood will be back in court on May 22nd.
