Caledonia land claims anniversary
The native land claim occupation in Caledonia is five years old today.
It was five years ago today that some Six Nations residents seized control of the Douglas Creek Estates housing subdivision, claiming the land as their own.
There was a backlash to a police raid during the height of tensions.
The federal government says the Six Nations relinquished their claim to the land in the 1800’s.
However, the band denies those claims.
The Ontario government bought the land from developers when the occupation began.
Native demonstrators continue to occupy the lands; something that has divided the town and led to allegations of violence and the occupation.
