The Six Nations elected council has arrived at an agreement to allow a major housing development to be built just east of Caledonia, on lands Six Nations has been trying to recover from the government for years.

The deal involves the developer contributing hundreds of acres of land to the reserve over the course of the construction period.

Three years ago the Six Nations elected council began communications with McClung Properties limited about Empire Communities and their Avalon development.

An agreement has been made that provides 200 acres of land and job opportunities for the people of Six Nations.

It has been ten years since major protests in Caledonia over disputed land that was expected to be developed into Douglas Creek estates.

For the first time since 2006 Caledonia is set to see some real growth thanks to an agreement with the Six Nations elected council. The project will be located just east of Oshweken within the Haldimand tract, an area that Six Nations has been trying to recover from the government for years.

The Avalon development will consist of about 27 hundred homes on 530 acres of land a third of that land will be dedicated to environmental protection and parks.

According to the agreement, an additional 200 acres near the reserve will be purchased by McClung Properties and transferred over to Six Nations throughout the development period.

“The important thing is, any land that they do obtain, we have to agree that it’s land that we would take.” Lonny Bomberry, the Director of Lands and Resources and helped arrange the deal. But not everyone on Six Nations is happy about it.

Bomberry notes that this deal with the developer won’t affect their case with the government. The Provincial Minister of Aboriginal affairs agrees.

On the site there’s an ongoing archeological investigation before construction begins. Empire Communities has promised home construction trade jobs to the people of Six Nations.

We received a statement from Empire Communities that says the agreement represents support for a healthy and vibrant Six Nations community.

Representatives from the elected council and McClung Properties will discuss the project details with the community at three separate information sessions this month.
