Cabbie slashed in the head

A typical night for one Hamilton taxi driver turned into a nightmare. It started on James St N near Rebecca St. The cabbie picked up a man who was seen and captured on closed circuit cameras in the area.

The attacker had the driver take him to 515 Queen Victoria Drive at 11:30 last night, when they arrived the trip took a turn for the worse. Police say the passenger demanded cash in an attempt to rob the cabbie.

The man brandished a knife and slashed the driver in the head and took off without any money. Police and paramedics were called to the scene and the K9 unit searched the area for the assailant but came up unsuccessful.

Police towed the taxi cab to their Hamilton police central station. They will process the car and review surveillance camera footage that was recorded inside at the time of the attack.

Detectives from the criminal investigation unit have been watching security camera recordings and the closed circuit cameras around James and Rebecca where the man was originally picked up by the cab driver. They are looking for a male, dark skin, 6ft, wearing a dark jacket with fur trim.

Police say the cab driver will luckily make a full recovery. He was taken to Hamilton General hospital where he his receiving treatment.
